MySQL Connector/ODBC 3.51 vs MySQL Connector/ODBC 5.1
By Joel | April 18, 2008 | Read Post
I could not for the life of me get the new MySQL Connector/ODBC Driver, version 5.1 to work on IIS5.1 with MySQL 5.0.51. Continual errors along the lines of:
ERROR [IM002] [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Can’t connect….
My quick solution was to simply install trusty old version 3.51, and everything worked fine. No more errors and all connections are working fine.

IEDevToolbar - Internet Explorer Development Toolbar
By Joel | March 30, 2008 | Read Post
Ok, they didn’t come up with the idea, but who cares? FireFox developers have been seeing this feature for a while now and provides some great insight into the construction of web pages.
The Internet Explorer Developer Toolbar (IEDevToolbar) is a great addition to Internet Explorer (compatible with versions 6 & 7). The Microsoft Internet Explorer Developer Toolbar provides a variety of tools for quickly creating, understanding, and troubleshooting Web pages.
It has a stack of features, but the thing we like about it the most is that it’s free!

Polar S725X Review
By Joel | March 16, 2008 | Read Post
This is a brief review of the new Polar S725x cycling/running heart rate monitor.
The Polar S725X is a great looking heart rate monitor, packed with features, and is the only complete cycling system that combines heart rate with speed, distance, altitude, ascent, cadence and optional power output.
The Polar S725X Cycling Computer is also compatible with the Polar S1 Foot Pod (for running speed and distance). This is a great feature if you are a keen runner in addition to your cycling efforts.
One feature sadly missed is the AutoStart/Stop function in other models. Other than for simplicity of recording, this feature also helped to give a much more accurate ride time for those of us who live in an urban environment full of traffic lights. With this model, when you stop at a set of traffic lights for 30seconds, the recording does not stop. For those of you trying to accurately track actual ride time, you should take this into account!
Another feature it would be great to see is an improved memory capacity. With heart rate, cadence, speed, altitude and temperature all recording at the maximum frequency of 5 seconds, the watch only allows for roughly 8 hours of training. For back to back days in the hills of 4 to 5 hours, this doesn’t cut it. Other brands of heart rate monitor can easily store more than this with an equivalent amount of data being recorded.
Polar ProTrainer 5 is a definite improvement on previous versions of the software. The ability to schedule sessions was a much need feature of the software, which helps to eliminate the need for multiple software packages to manage your training simply. The interface is much more user friendly and still as stable as ever.
All in all, this is a great product that should help you train smarter and keep up some of the motivation to get out there and ride! When you’ve finished, you can even check out all the great data you have produced!
The official Australian Polar page for the S725X.
FitShop, an Australian Authorised Polar Dealer, offer great prices and even better support. I would not hesitate to recommend them for all your Polar needs. The S725X has an RRP of $649 in Australia, FitShop retail it for only $525! Check it out!

CSS Font Sizes
By Joel | February 27, 2008 | Read Post
When using CSS to set font sizes and spacing, you can use the following shorthand code to achieve it.
font: 90%/175% 'Lucida Grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', Verdana, sans-serif;
Changing the 90% will change the text size, while changing the 175% will change the text spacing.
Happy CSS’ing!

Dreamweaver Developer Toolbox Useless For ASP.Net
By Joel | February 3, 2008 | Read Post
For ASP.Net developers using Dreamweaver and wondering if the new Adobe Dreamweaver Developer Toolbox is worth the $299 USD price tag, this may be of interest - this set of server behaviours and commands does not provide anything for ASP.Net.
On the other hand, if you are a developer using PHP, ColdFusion or ASP (VBScript), then you will find some great time-saving functions within this toolbox.
Personally, I think the price tag of $299 USD is very hefty considering a full version of Dreamweaver CS3 goes for only $399 USD, but if the value of the product is obviously determined by the work produced….

Limited Life For Line Rental!
By Joel | February 3, 2008 | Read Post
Flicking through my January issue of APC Magazine today, I came across an interesting article explaining the introduction of broadband services over existing telephone lines without the need for a contract with Telstra/Optus/etc.
iiNet is offering what they call Naked DSL, which provides a broadband service over your phone line without an actual phone service. What this actually means in no more monthly line rental fee! Of course, it is not available everywhere yet….
Interesting….
