Dreamweaver Tip #1

By Joel | May 26, 2007

Set up your web site as a ’site’ in Dreamweaver.

To do this, you need to follow a few simple steps.

  1. Open Adobe Dreamweaver CS3
  2. Click the ‘Site’ menu item
  3. Click ‘New Site’
  4. The Basic tab is sufficient for most web sites, except if you are developing in ASP, PHP, etc. Select the ‘Basic’ tab
  5. Type your site name (this can be anything)
  6. Type the URL of your site
  7. If you are not using ASP, PHP, etc, then click ‘No’ for server side technology
  8. On the next screen, navigate to the folder/directory your web site lives in on your computer
  9. Te next screen asks about how you connect to your remote server. Dreamweaver can handle FTP connections, but I choose not to use the built in FTP functions of Dreamweaver….so choose ‘None’
  10. Click ‘Next’
  11. Click ‘Done’

That is it. Now you have access to some great built-in functions such as automatic site-wide link updating, connection string management, plus much more. It also provides a good clean interface for working directly with your web site files.

A quick introduction I know, but one that so many people skip who really should take the 2 minutes and 30 seconds it takes to set it up right the first time!!
